I had the opportunity to watch The Social Network last week with my wife. I had been wanting to see the movie since it was out at the theaters. Then after all of the award nominations it received and won I wanted to see it even more.
The movie tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. It takes you through its beginning and through all of the controversy that surrounded it and its developer.
Did he steal the idea? He could have.
The thing is he has given people what they want. A way to stay in touch and connected with people. Facebook is everywhere!
I was not disappointed with the movie. It kept me entertained throughout. Whether you love him or hate him Mark Zuckerberg knows what he is doing, and is good at it. He a computer genius? Yes. I wish I had that kind of developer knowledge…
While watching the movie I made a mental note of three things:
People – When running a business, if I ever do, I must surround myself with the best people I can find. Not only the best at their job, but also people that I can trust and that I enjoy being around.
Fun – Whatever I do in this life I want to pursue what makes me happy. I do not want to spend my life doing something that I dread. I do not want to look back thirty or forty years from now and say “I have wasted so much time doing something I really do not like.”
Success – Success can be good and bad I believe. If you are successful their are always going to be those trying to bring you down. No matter how good or bad a person you are.
Have you seen The Social Network? What did you think?
Here is a video I found with some of Mark’s thoughts on the movie:

Adam, I saw it…Twice! As a Entrepreneur turned Church planter and pastor, stories about tenacity and perseverance inspire me.
I don’t agree with stealing others ideas, or leaving a trail of broken relationships in your wake, but I love people who have heart and drive, and do what others say couldn’t be done.
I agree Artie. Determination is very inspiring.
Like you I enjoyed the movie (saw it in theaters a while back). I thought the dialogue was great, and the movie kept me entertained throughout the entire picture. It was definitely of the top 3 for me last year.
I thought the film could not have been cast any better.
Adam, I saw the Social Network in the theater and really enjoyed the story even though I knew that much of the tale was over dramatized. I was fascinated by the creative genius of these guys but also the interpersonal stuff. How many of us have spitballed ideas with some friends? Imagine if things kept building and then you suddenly had this monster on your hands. I’m amazed it worked out as smoothly as it has!
Seriously.
I have not yet seen the movie, but even at the very beginning of that video they say it is a “fictionalized account”. I think people are getting the wrong idea, thinking that the movie is more like a documentary. If it was the true (or at least more accurate) story, it would not be interesting enough to make a movie let alone get anyone interested in watching it.
Anyway, just wanted to point that out since most people I’ve talked to seem to think the story told in the movie is completely factual. I’ll check back when I actually get around to watching it!
I agree. I think a lot of it was done purely for entertainment purposes.
I did see it and I really enjoyed it. I would love to see a real documentary made though. Maybe one day?
