A Healthier Me #bettermyself

As I continue to explore my list of personal goals the next item following growing my faith is to be a healthier me.

A lot goes into being a healthy person. It really is a big commitment.

What I am learning with every year that passes is that as I get older it gets harder and harder to keep the waist line from being an embarrassment.

Every year that passes I always say that I am going to lose weight and get into better shape. Every year I end up failing though. Even last year I ended up failing. However, I did lose weight…but ended up putting it back on. The good thing is there is that I know how to get the weight off.

I spent many of the years of my life up to this point in pretty good shape. Being an athlete for most of my life I stayed pretty healthy. Then upon leaving college where I played baseball I thought I would take a break from all the daily workouts and running that I was used too. Big mistake. I got out of the routine that I was in, and it has been so hard to get back into it.

My main goal for the year of 2012 is to finish the year in better health than when I started. To do this I plan on doing a few things to insure that I hold myself accountable to a healthier me and that is:

  • A Partner – My wife and I are going to be in this together. We both want to get healthier and lose weight and we feel that if we do it together then we will push each other a little more. It also is nice to have her there when I wan to super size meal to say “are you sure?”. That is really all I need to say no and add water instead of a soda.
  • Soda – I do not drink a lot of regular…diet on the other hand I do. In the past I have consumed several a day. However, I know that all soda is bad for me no matter if it is diet. I know that I am never going to never drink another soda again is not true, but I do want to cut back and have been successful in cutting back to only a few a week.
  • Water – In drinking less soda I want to consume more water. I have never been a bog water drinker, but I know it is good for me and my health. This is a must!
  • Log My Intake – Another thing that I am planning on doing is to log what foods I eat, and beverages I consume on a daily basis. It is just another way to hold myself accountable for what I am consuming. The tool I am going to use for this is Lose It. It is an online tracking tool that also has a very handy iPhone app that makes it very easy to log food and track weight.
  • Exercise – Right now I want to try to get in three or more calorie burning activities in a week, and improve on that as the year progresses. One thing that I would love to do this year is to run in a 5K.
  • Portions – My main problem when eating is controlling my portions. I tend to eat for two. One thing that has helped me is to eat on smaller plates. If I control my portions then I in turn lower my caloric intake…if I avoid seconds also. I am not going to say I am never going to go back for seconds, but limit them and only get seconds of healthy choices.

So those are some ways that i am going to striver to be healthier in 2012, and train myself to create better eating and dieting habits into the future.

What are some ways that you find help you in staying healthy?

A friend of mine always drinks a good-sized glass/cup of water before every meal. Even if we have lunch out, and he orders a fountain drink, he fills it with water first, then he refills with soda.

Doing so increases his water consumption, and it fills up your stomach (limiting 2nd portions).

I think it’s a good idea, and do it some.

I think water will be a big helper to my health all around. It has so many benefits.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Joey.

Running (or other exercise), sleep, and time in God’s Word are three things that help me stay in shape.

Good plan Adam. Hoping you maintain it. At 6’5″ I have been able to maintain a fairly good weight. My metabolism is starting to slow down now (I’m 59) so I need to cut back on the amount I eat. it is the time of the year when cycling is almost non-existent so I have taken to spending more time on the Bowflex (got a great deal on a used one). But eating less is so important. I used to drink one or two Diet Dr Peppers a day. I have really tried hard to cut that down. Wishing you (and your wife) well in your attempt.

    Adam,

Congrats! Keep on plugging on. I’ve given up pop (soda) almost exclusively and rarely miss it. Although my son is catching on to pop I drank as a kid and so I try it out once in a while…

…by the way. I think you have a spacing issue under soda. I don’t know what “cu tit to only a few a week” has to do with cutting back on sugary drinks :)

Thanks for stopping by an commenting. It will be hard for me to give up soda completely. I wish I could though.

Thanks for the heads up on the typo.
