This is the story of 12-year old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) who is uprooted from his comfortable lifestyle in his home in Detroit when his mom gets a job transfer to China. Upon arrival in his new home he finds that there are going to be many obstacles that he must overcome. However, Mei Ying, Dre’s new classmate immediately catches his eye. Not knowing what a relationship with Ying would lead to many cultural obstacles and confrontations with bully Cheng.
After a couple of altercations with Cheng and his pack of bullies Dre befriends maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). It is through Mr. Han that Dre is taught the art of Kung Fu. DreĀ learns that Kung Fu is just as much about learning life lessons and respect as it is about protecting yourself.
I thought the remake of the movie was really good. Even if you do know what is going to happen the different location of the story and the modernization of the film makes the film fell new and exciting.
The acting was really good and I think that Jaden Smith is really going to be fun to watch mature in the movie industry. Jackie Chan plays his character to perfection as well. They both bring the right amount of comedy and seriousness that is needed in the film.
The enemy is still as evil and is cold as ever, and you are still left cheering for the broken hero to prevail in the end.
