I just read an article posted on Bloomberg that a worst case scenario for the oil spill is that it could last until December. This would result in roughly 4 million, yes 4 million, barrels of oil pouring in to the Gulf. These number they are throwing at us are completely staggering. They are estimating that anywhere from 16,000 to 60, 000 barrels are pouring out a day. With the large amounts of oil being deposited into the ocean it is estimated to reach the Florida coastline by as early as Wednesday. It is currently being spotted 9.5 to 10 miles off the coast of Pensacola.
The oil has really effected the beach travel this season so far. Occupancy of condo are way down and I have heard that they are even having people sign clauses that if oil shows up on the beaches there will be no refunds given. The oil has also put a damper on the fishing business in the Gulf as well. Currently only portions of the Gulf can actually be fished.
Then there is the ever looming hurricane season coming up with an estimated 14 to 23 named storms, 8 to 14 which are anticipated to be hurricanes. This information was issued the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week. The most gloomy of the information released though was that 3 to 7 of those hurricane could be major, ranging anywhere from category 3 to category 5. You can only imagine the images from the storm surge as the oil riddled ocean water is brought ashore. it really paints a pretty somber picture.
However, all we can do is pray for the situation to be handled in God’s time, and have faith that His will will be done in the midst of this tragedy. We need to also pray for all of the families and individuals that live on the coast whose lives have been greatly effected by this. They have lost and will continue to loose so much until something can be done.
