Becoming a Better Blogger / Writer #bettermyself

As I continue to look at ways I want to better myself this year the next item on the list is to become a better blogger / writer.

I have been blogging for over three years now and until recently I was a very consistent blogger. I was blogging and writing 5 days. Then we moved and my schedule it seemed was thrown completely off. I now if I am lucky blog twice a week. Something that I find disappointing; something I want to do change.

There are several things I am going to do to become a better blogger and writer: Continue Reading…

A More Organized Year #bettermyself

As I continue to explore ways that I intend to reach the goal of bettering myself in 2012 I look to become more organized.

I have already explored two of the areas that I want to improve in my faith and my health. In the third installment I want to be better organized all around. I want to be organized at home and at the office.

Organization is not my strongest trait. My office at work is more organized chaos than I would like. I know were things are, but it just feels clustered. At home it is the same way. The place that I call my desk tends to be a catch-all with very little organization going on. I am finding this out more now that tax time is coming around and I am having to dig through drawers to find old stuff and stuff needed for filing this year.

When Work and Family Collide by Andy Stanley

It is a fact there are only 24 hours in a day.

In those 24 hours we have to spend time and enjoy our family and do our job on a daily basis to support our family and provide for our needs. Both are the two biggest areas of our lives and both play the largest part in shaping our identities.

In Andy Stanley’s book When Work and Family Collide he stresses the importance of balancing those two areas of our life. We must not cheat our families by spending to many hours at work. He is not suggesting cheat work either. In the book he shows how to prioritize you life and not have to cheat in either area. He shares scriptures that focus on work and family that back his though process and even shares tools that he has used in his own life.

Stanley shares what is sad is the individuals that are cheating their families do not even realize it. If asked they say they loves their family, but their family understands. This could be true at first but over time this begins to tear a family apart. You begin cheating your family out of time they so preciously want. Then when you make it a priority to make time for your family it is already too late and the years of damage has been done (i.e. family member turns to drugs, spouse leaving, depression…) Continue Reading…

A Healthier Me #bettermyself

As I continue to explore my list of personal goals the next item following growing my faith is to be a healthier me.

A lot goes into being a healthy person. It really is a big commitment.

What I am learning with every year that passes is that as I get older it gets harder and harder to keep the waist line from being an embarrassment.

Every year that passes I always say that I am going to lose weight and get into better shape. Every year I end up failing though. Even last year I ended up failing. However, I did lose weight…but ended up putting it back on. The good thing is there is that I know how to get the weight off.

I spent many of the years of my life up to this point in pretty good shape. Being an athlete for most of my life I stayed pretty healthy. Then upon leaving college where I played baseball I thought I would take a break from all the daily workouts and running that I was used too. Big mistake. I got out of the routine that I was in, and it has been so hard to get back into it.

My main goal for the year of 2012 is to finish the year in better health than when I started. To do this I plan on doing a few things to insure that I hold myself accountable to a healthier me and that is:

I Am Second by Doug Bender and Dave Sterrett

“…becoming Second isn’t the journey of perfected saints or of superhero believers. It is the honest, raw and often painful journey of broken people who have decided that life is not about them.”

I had heard of I Am Second before I had actually read this title. One day I had stumbled across their website and watched several of the testimonies each of these big names in sports, television, and business were sharing. It was certainly some very powerful stuff!

I saw the book and new I wanted to read it and see who else is participating in this movement.

The quote that I started off with is the basis for what this book is about. It is about finding yourself at a place where you have to choose to put God ahead of yourself and be broken and humble enough to put yourself second.

The book is broken by each individual sharing a little about their testimonies and how they finally realized that they could not win their battles on their own and they needed Jesus Christ in their lives. They had just about every earthly thing they could possibly want but there was still a void that was not filled.

There are lots of celebrities participating in the movement. Some of those included in the book are: Brian “Head” Welch, Josh Hamilton, Tony Dungy, Bethany Hamilton, and many others.
