Time for a Blog Redesign Built on the @standardtheme

After blogging for almost 8 months now on the Standard Theme (Which Rocks!) with the same looking design I have decided that it is time for a remodel.

So you will notice some changes over the next couple of weeks as I get things just the way that I want them.

The first addition to this I did a while back. If you have not noticed I added a link to my shared Google Reader Feeds. This allows you to follow the posts that I am reading and find interesting and valuable. The icon looks like this:

I have also changed the site background and the sidebar.

There are several other things still on the to-do list like:

  • Adding a Subscribe Page.
  • Re-do my Advertising Page.
  • Redesign the Life Goals/Bucket List Page and add new stuff.
  • Creating a Logo and new Header (Stumped!)
  • Adding a some widget areas in footer.
  • Adding an Image Rotator with Various Images of Me!
  • Add some styling to the navigation bar.

So there are more changes a coming. If something breaks, and the site is down. No worries, it is me under the hood working :)

How often do you work on redesign or modifying your blog?

I’m new to it all, but I want to revisit my site’s design once every 6 months. My hope is that will let me focus on the content as well…

Site looks good, by the way!

      Thanks.

Changed it up a bit. Thanks for the pointers. Much appreciated Matthew.

I like it brother – hollar if you need any help. Few recommendations for you.

Fix your sidebar so we can see the text – all CSS tweaking.

The post itself is glaringly white. Maybe bring it down to more of the lightest grey in your header image?

The breadcrumbs are too dark also – again CSS tweaking.

Let me know if you need any help man, looks good!

Now that I see the background to the sidebar, I would keep the blue and change the font color. The box around it feels constricted for some reason, just my two cents is all.

Woah! It changed already! haha I like it! I usually change things around on my site every month or so… nothing major. Major things happen about 2x a yr.

I am thinking about changing my theme to something premium (because I have enough credits). What do you think? Do you like my theme now?

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:07 am #

      Thanks Brandon.
I would definitely upgrade to premium theme. So much more options. Maybe look into something clean and less cluttered. I would also do away with the large ad at the top of your site. It is kind of distracting.
Also, just out of curiosity why did you make your home page your about page instead of your blog?

      • Brandon March 2, 2011 at 1:40 pm #

Thanks for the recommendations! Well, I have nothing to do with the ad at the top. It is a free site so that is why it does that, but I should be able to get rid of it with the premium???

I am actually changing that right now… I like the blog page to be the home page. I’m turning the home page into the about page to make it more blog style. I think that this might provide better things for the site. Next stop: premium! haha

        • Adam March 2, 2011 at 1:44 pm #

Good luck. Premium is always better. You ever looking to get away from webs.com?

It looks good Adam. I like it.

I’m not so “focused” on the design as of yet. I’m sure in the near future, I’ll do a couple of tweaks here and there. I want to focus on content for now.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:02 am #

      Thanks Moe.

I’m always tweeking a little. I just re-installed Disqus so I can keep up with comments on the go. I prefer the native wp-system, but I really like to be able to email replies from my phone. I’d love to do a new header, but I’m stumped as well.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:02 am #

Yea the new header and possible logo is throwing me for a loop.

  6. Clay Morgan March 1, 2011 at 4:09 pm #

Dude. Love it. I think the new look is fantastic!

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:01 am #

      Thanks Clay!

Looking good Adam. Keep it up.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:07 am #

      Thanks Sean!

Awesome man, like the textured background at the top. I tweak mine every so often, ’cause I get bored.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:08 am #

Same here. Boredom leads to mine as well. Thanks for the compliments.

  9. seekingpastor March 1, 2011 at 5:22 pm #

Not often at all. It is not something that I am good at. I need help–and lots of it.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:09 am #

I have learned a lot about coding by failing. I just jumped in and have learned some things along the way…

  10. ThatGuyKC March 1, 2011 at 9:31 pm #

Liking the tweaks to the site so far. Looking forward to seeing what else you do “under the hood”.

My site is in desperate need of some design work. Going to start with a header logo and slowly work my way down. On the back end I think some policy pages for comments, disclosure and such are needed too.

    • Adam March 2, 2011 at 9:10 am #

Thanks KC and good luck on your tweaks.

I am stumped on my logo / header too…

    Hey Adam,
It’s been a few days since I have been by your actual site (vs. reading in Google Reader)…as I loaded it up this morning my first word was, “Wow!” I am digging the new look and feel – really nice.

My blog is about three months old now. I have been learning a tremendous amount about the design and underlying components. I am about ready to implement Standard Theme! I just need to make the time.

After that, I hope to have a stable foundation that will last for several months – allowing for minor tweaks as needed. I have found that people like to have a certain amount of consistency so that they know how to navigate and use a web site. People do like freshness – but, major elements need to be changed on a less frequent basis.

Hey Adam great looking blog site, I like your approach to content also. Good stuff! I’m new to the whole WordPress Standard theme thing but I’m trying to find help … moving from Typepad

    • Adam March 4, 2011 at 11:22 am #

Thanks Rob. Let me know if you ever need any help.

I hope to be able to move to standard theme soon. This has been pushed to the back burner for a little while because it is not a priority just yet. My wife and I are paying off some things per Dave Ramsey’s FPU.

    • Adam March 15, 2011 at 12:02 pm #

Standard Theme is awesome. First things first though.
