About a month ago the book titled We Be Big by Rick Burgess and Bill Bussey with Don Keith came available on the Booksneeze blogging for books program. As soon as I saw this book I knew that I would be reading it. You see, I listen to the self-proclaimed “sexiest fat men alive” on a daily basis while I sit at the office working. They are a part of my morning routine and have been for several years now.
The thing I like about them and the show is that you really never know what you are going to get when it comes to the theme of the show. It can range from family life, to politics, to faith, to PETA. You just never know.
The book We Be Big takes you through the childhood of Rick and Bill (Bubba), the history of how the show started, and how it evolved into what it is today.
As a fan of the show I knew I would enjoy this book, but I had no idea that I would take away so much from it.
As I look back at some of the highlights I jotted down while reading this book here are a some of the things that kept jumping out at me:
- Struggles – Life is not going to be a smooth ride without any problems. It will be full of ups and downs. In We Be Big we can see all of the struggles that revolved around the show, but also in the personal lives of Rick and Bubba. I think the struggles are there for a reason. I think that it requires us to put more faith in our Father in Heaven. As a result of those struggle and overcoming those adversities God will receive glory.
- Be Passionate – Another thing inspiring about this book and that I think is important to all is to pursue what you are passionate about. If you are passionate about something you will work hard at it to make sure that it is a success. That is one thing that is evident in this book. Rick and Bubba are passionate about what they do, and have fun doing it.
- Hard Work – There are a lot of people who want to be successful out there. However, there are not a lot of people who are willing to put in the hard work to get them to the top, and maintain that hard work ethic so they can stay there. One thing is evident about Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey, and that is that they give it all they have every day. If they are having a bad day or really do not want to be there that day you as the listener would never know it.
- Be Yourself – This is one thing that Rick and Bubba are without a doubt, They do not put on some kid of radio facade, but merely they just be themselves and that is something that people can relate with. SO often people try to have different personalities for work, church, and home. It is a real challenge just to be yourself!
- Faith – God has His hand in everything we do. We may not always understand why this or that happens, but he in the end know best. We have to have faith that will hold true even in the toughest of tomes. Times at which it would be so easy to question everything, and turn your back on your faith. The stronger you build up your faith, the more prepared you will be when adversity hits you! So build it up. It is so very important. A strong faith is so inspiring and Rick lost is young son Bronner a couple of years ago and the faith he showed throughout was uplifting. I have posted what he said at the memorial service for his son below. It is pretty long, but I would encourage you watch it. It is some really powerful stuff. Especially for us fathers.
The book is a quick and easy read. If you are a fan of the show you will love it. If you like a good story about a couple of a guys who work hard to accomplish something and want few laughs along the way you will also enjoy it.
I am glad that I got the opportunity to read this book because it really revealed several important things about life and faith that I need to hear often.
Do you listen to any radio shows daily?
I received this book in turn for a review from the Booksneeze blogging for books program. Please visit my disclosure policy for any further information.

I’m not a fan of the show simply because I’ve never listened to them. But the book sounds like it’s really good. I might have to check them out in the morning… I really only listen to the local christian radio station.
Yea I switch over to the local Christian station after the show is over…
Adam, thanks for the book recommend. I saw that book listed but decided to go with a different book.
in terms of what I listen to, I usually listen to sports radio. I have been hooked on it since I was a little kid.
No problem David.
I listen to sports radio sometimes in the afternoons.
I have to say, I don’t listen to radio at all. Everything I listen is either my music on my iPhone and/or iPad. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I did turn on the radio. I used to listen to podcasts, but even that I haven’t done in quite some time.
I listen to my iPod when I cannot find anything worth listening too.
Occationally I’ll turn on morning radio on the way to work…. but most of the time I stick to my podcasts. I have three that I enjoy every week: Wait Wait Don’t Tell me, This American Life, and Freakonomics
I find each of those to be uniquely fascinating and challenging…
I have tried podcast but have never really got into them. I guess I just haven’t found any good ones…
Havent heard their show, but sounds interesting. Thanks for the review
You bet Mo. Thanks for stopping by!
